I could be sitting out there right now. My central heating broke down on Wednesday, and the British Gas engineer spent 2 hours this morning trying (in vain) to fix it. Meanwhile the house is getting colder and colder and over the weekend and probably into next week it will continue to.

I'd have to buy hundreds and pile them up like WWII sandbags against and completely blocking every door and window in the house. Even that might not keep out the icy draft round my legs and ankles. This afternoon, here, we had a hail shower.

The original sausage dog draught excluder, which I still have somewhere, is (like me) quite old now and I wouldn't subject it to the same indignities which (like me) it enjoyed in days gone by.

Then make yourself a footbag. Get an old square-ended sleeping bag, fold it inside itself and stitch it in place, so you end up with a double-thickness bag in which to stick your tootsies whilst sitting at your desk.

Then get some furry slippers. I don't know why you want central heating in this mild weather. Does Ealing have a different climate to the rest of Southern England?

Come sit in this house for 5 minutes and you'll find out why. I'm wearing thick walking socks (as good as slippers) and a fleece jacket on top of my thermal onesie, and am still freezing.

Beautiful lighting and dramatic skies - ideal photographic conditions - all day yesterday, but I unfortunately was unable to take advantage of them.

Thank you for your kind invitation, but Ealing is not on my bucket list of places to go.

Thick socks won't work unless combined with a footbag to exclude the draughts.

A thermal onesie is probably insufficient unless combined with SEVERAL layers on top.

Then I'll wear a twosie.

Another British Gas engineer came this morning and confirmed that there's a blockage in the system which can only be cleared by 'power flushing' it - a day's work - and the soonest they can do that is the 19th April. I'm going to have to buy an electric fan heater or even two, and expect a massive electricity bill in due course.

Be thankful you're not forced to rely on a heat pump (yet).

But there are easier ways of keeping warm, as suggested.
