Bridgeton Covered Bridge

Bridgeton Covered Bridge
The covered bridge, after 99 years of faithful service, was retired in 1967 when the concrete bridge was built, but it still serves as the gateway to Bridgeton. (79) bridges challenge

Neat image! There are a couple of covered bridges near where I live. One is still in use over the border in Pennsylvania. It was recently restored. Interestingly, it crosses over a small dam just like the one you have pictured.

Thanks Valerie! It's not uncommon to find one near an old mill site and dam. The mills were always on a stream and there was always traffic to the mills. Some counties have more than others here. Some are still in use for auto traffic and some are just for pedestrians. Farm equipment has really outgrown them here!

This is so interesting. I have never seen a covered bridge in Sweden, but have found some in other European countries.

I think it was a case where wood was a real surplus commodity here when they were built.

oh what a fantastic rebuild, we had a few in the area where I grew up, they still use them and have them landscaped all up, but none with steps.

Thanks Wendi! This county has a covered bridge festival and the steps lead from a large parking area to the bridge. Most of the bridges lack the steps as well! :-)

Thanks Chris! I use to spend my Saturdays hunting these bridges down until I got busy. I'm hoping to start again soon!
