Walford's Gibbet, (pip)

Walford's Gibbet, (pip)
November colours in a late afternoon capture from Walford's Gibbet, on Somerset's Quantock Hills,
A place with an uncomfortable history, a brief summary below.

John Walford was born in the Parish of Over Stowey on the Quantock Hills.
A charcoal burner John was something of a local celebrity. He was friends with the diarist, Thomas Poole who wrote about John, as did Wordsworth and Coleridge, who also lived in the village,

He murdered his wife after an argument, John's trial took place at Bridgwater Assizes on 18th August 1789. When he was found guilty and sentenced to death.

At the point of this image he was hung, with his body then placed in an iron cage and left to hang for a further 100 days before burial.

The pip is the road sign at the place of the murder, It's still called Dead Woman's Ditch !

I wish you a safe Friday and a good weekend,,,,,,,,,, Large view, perhaps.
