An interesting and colourful series, Graham. I remember that, when I was in about 6th grade primary the teacher set, as weekend homework, to write an essay about the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. The problem was that I'd never even been to Toowoomba then! One of those memories that stick...!

I had a slightly comparable occasion in first or second year. We had to write one about our favourite TV program. We didn't have one so, just for fun, I just wrote 'No TV'. The teacher was more frustrated than furious.

In my case, my father said "I'll write something for you to copy". So he wrote a load of waffle about the colourful flowers, the aromas etc. I copied it and the teacher gave me a pass mark, writing on the page . "George, you can do better than this". :-) He clearly could see what had been done.

:-) I was similarly disappointed by father's 'assistance' on a maths assignment in fourth year. He worked as a physicist, but it was a long time since he'd worked in that part of geometry. I never had the heart to tell him he got 2/10...

Thanks Peter. As part of the annual flower festival, Carnival of Flowers, the council plants large numbers of colourful flowers in parks and on roundabouts. Some people open their gardens to the public and the newspaper runs a competition with various categories.
