Forster Tuncurry

Forster Tuncurry
The bridge, which spans Cape Hawke Harbour, or the Wallamba River was officially opened on July 18, 1959.

It is 631 metres long, 13.5 metres wide, and the bridge arch sits 6 metres above the water.

Before the bridge was built a ferry operated between Forster and Tuncurry for close to 70 years.

Brilliant photo - just look at the colour of the water - stunning. In fact your weather is so much better than ours here and we're supposed to be in late Spring.

Thanks Jenny. We are having crisp clear Autumn days now, quite chilly overnight.

In both photos the incredible colour of the water and the blue sky enhance the bridge structure.

Thanks Gudrun. The water in the lake is quite shallow, over white sand.

Die schmalen Stützen im Wasser bei diesem Teil der Brücke finde ich interessant. Weißt Du etwas mehr darüber?

It has varying supports through its very long span...The massive structure is 631 metres long, consists of 47 pre-stressed spans, and is 13.5 metres wide with 376 pre-stressed concrete beams.
At the time of opening, it was the longest pre-stressed concrete bridge in the Southern Hemisphere!

The project to build the bridge began in 1954 when the then Minister for Transport called for tenders to construct a government designed bridge of steel beams and concrete foundations to join Foster and Tuncurry. Two years later the tender was awarded to well-known Australian construction company, John Holland.

Thanks Bea, shallow over white sand in the lake beyond the bridge, which gives it the colour.
