Dora chooses re-use

Dora chooses re-use
Taken for International Earth Day.

Earth Day 2018 - April 22 - to help end plastic pollution. Plastic is threatening our planet's survival, from poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our streams and landfills. Together, we can make a difference.

Great choice. This week I have tried to read a lot on this topic, and there are so much I did not know at all. For example tram and metro (railway) seems to be better option than cars. Rubber tires contains plastic that ends into ground and water.

A very timely shot and an important message, Gillian. Even more timely with the news tonight that a Queensland council is cancelling waste recycling.

By way of background, Pam, it seems our recycling has been sent to China but they've now stopped it, so the costs are going up.

Yes, latest on that... The Ipswich City Council, west of Brisbane, says it intends to reverse its decision to send recycling to landfill. (Updated Friday 20 April at 5:52pm)

The Council said on Wednesday China's import ban on recycling and the rising level of contaminated or non-recyclable rubbish in yellow bins meant it had become too costly for the city to recycle, so from now everything placed in yellow bins would go straight to landfill.

We all have to do al we can. here.. we live in the middle of nowhere. When we go into town we take all the recycle. The town we go to have made a huge effort.. it is rare here sadly.

We use recyclable bags for our weekly shop, but I notice that many folks don't, even when there is a 5p charge for every plastic bag. I rarely buy pre-packed veg, we have a local greengrocer in the next village and they supply paper bags. But I get some annoyed looks at the supermarket checkout if I dump loose carrots etc on their scales.

Dora does it right! The bags fold up small and don't weigh much so I don't understand why people don't have them with them all the time! Too often it's either the guys in business suits or people on the dole who buy plastic bags;-)

A wonderfully fitting shot, Gillian. A very smart cat! ;-)
I keep using my plastic bags as long as they last. This usually takes months until a bag is broken. I also use shopping bags made of fabric (cloth bag).
For larger grocery shopping I use folding boxes in the car. Unfortunately, this does not change the fact that most groceries in the supermarket are wrapped in plastic paper or plastic bags or shrink wrapped in plastic.

Yes, the packaging of goods is still a problem. At least the paper and cardboard are recyclable.
