this photo by John FitzGerald

Down in PATH, a system of 30 km of (mostly) tunnels under downtown Toronto. PATH is not an acronym, city council just likes to spell it that way. It's a path, a stuffy path with dubious fire safety, although I suppose the lack of oxygen would help retard any fire. There are hundreds of fast food joints down there, and lots of, uh, minimalist corners to eat in, like this one. In the winter it's very useful, though. You can walk through it and warm up. Thousands of office and retail workers can go there to eat without having to put their winter gear on. They weren't eating there when I took this because it was Sunday. And cold, so I took a shortcut through there to warm up.

oHo, Buelipix, Paolo Tanino, Gabi Lombardo and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great use of repeating shapes and a limited palette, John. All the best, Joe

Thanks, Joe. I think this is far less grainy than the version you commented on that I posted briefly before. Have a good week.

When I visited Toronto back in the early 80's we were told about weatherproof underground tunnels and never really took it seriously and we didn't have time to explore. I think we just put it down to someone trying to pull the wool over some gullible British sailor eyes and ignored it.

How strange, after all these years, to discover it was true :-)))

A fascinating image John..!!

Thanks, Keith, Winter passageways like this aren't uncommon in North America. Montreal and Minneapolis have highly regarded ones. I wouldn't explore Toronto's unless it's very cold.

Yes, there's not much going on there on Sunday ... but either not on Saturday ;-)
But if it's raining heavily or cold, it's a good alternative to get around Toronto downtown ...

Especially with the wind-tunnel effect created by all the towers above ground.
