Los Angeles County
Folder: California
(This album is a recent move from Flickr and some of the descriptions still need editing) My goal with the LA county photos in general is to illustrate the architectural and cultural richness of the area. The pictures posted here are not meant to be particularly representative of the area in general, but are simply reflective of the areas that I've found interesting or peculiar. Photos are in alp…

Burbank LA River (3681)

Looking east along the LA River from a foot path in Burbank. The vast majority of the LA River is this concrete channel that was created by Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930's and 40's due to concerns about flooding. Visible between the pipes is the LA River horse bridge (see nearby pictures).

The horse bridge connects stables on the north (Burbank) side of the LA River with Griffith Park where there are many miles of horse trails. The hills in the background are just a very small part of the park.

The horse bridge (a suspension bridge) that connects stables on the north (Burbank) side of the LA River with Griffith Park.
Burbank LA River horse bridge traffic jam (3694)

Of course in LA you have traffic (horse) jams! Everyone was riding in groups and the bridge isn't wide enough for groups to pass, so you have to wait. The group on the south side of the river waited a fairly long time, with two groups heading towards them over the bridge and they were still waiting when I left the area.

Horse crossing at Riverside Drive. I thought I'd also captured where the button was, but not very well. If you look close, it's at the level of the feet of the horse image.
Burbank VFW post (3731)

Roster for USS Gudgeon, a submarine lost in WWII. The roster is on a plaque at the Burbank VFW USS Gudgeon post, which seems to be in as somewhat unusual location since it is in a relatively busy commercial area surrounded by small businesses and auto repair places. A gudgeon, per Wikipedia, is a small fresh water fish.

Castaic: I-5 Paintball Park (Baghdad) 1476a

Baghdad, at Warped Paintball Park. Per their website ( www.warpedpaintballpark.com/gallery_new/town.htm ), the area of the cutouts to the right are labeled Baghdad. They are reminiscent of the sorts of cutouts used in military training.

Entrance to the park, showing the unusual configuration of the I-5 here, where the northbound lane is to the left (west) of the southbound lane.

Warped Paintball Park ( www.warpedpaintballpark.com ). There were very few people at the park; this was taken on a Friday afternoon around 4 PM. In the center are very large spools of the sort used with very large electrical cables. The overall area seems to be used for creating mock battles.
Castaic: Lake Hughes Rd 1479a

Castaic Lake reservoir, from Lake Hughes Road. Castaic Lake is part of the State Water Project. The white spots on the surface of the reservoir are boats, thus giving some indication of how low the reservoir is.
