Empire, NV US Gypsum (0254)

Sign for the US Gypsum plant in Empire, NV. Though the plant closed in 2011, the maintenance of the grounds leave it looking as if it had closed only recently.

Fallon, NV garage (0153)
Former Fallon garage and Chevrolet/Oldsmobile (and maybe more) dealer/service, with a 1958 Ford Thunderbird in front. The building wasn't open, but inside there was a large and fascinating array of gas pumps from across the ages, plus automobiles and trucks (see nearby pictures)

The gas pumps in the window are called visible gas pumps and, from what I could find, came into use in the 1920's. See description of the garage in the nearby picture.

As this indicates, the garage had quite a collection of antique gas pumps. See description with nearby picture.

History of Gerlach. The town itself was established when the Western Pacific railroad was being built in 1905.

Gerlach Garage, with Black Rock bar to the left. Went to the Black Rock bar the night I was there -- friendly group of about 12 people.
Gerlach, NV Bruno's (0174)
Bruno's everything in Gerlach. It was the only motel, cafe, casino.... and gas station and community center. The motel rooms were inexpensive and simple, but okay. The cafe was basic American diner food (good) and friendly folk (both staff and customers), and the saloon was the same -- friendly and sociable.

Gerlach, NV sunrise (0184)

Sunrise over the former Western Pacific rail route (now Union Pacific) across the Black Rock Desert. I expect that crossing the desert is very routine for current UP engineers, but it must have been a quite wondrous journey when riding the rails in a passenger train was still magical.
