Jacksonville Reflections - grammar school (google)
This is a satellite view from Google – I’m surprised that the city, through decades of economic transition, hasn’t filled in the space between the front of the main building and the street.
Actually, I’m surprised at how little change there has been to the overall layout. The main, red-roofed, building was built in 1942 and appears to have not changed in size. Behind the main building, the added wing where my first and second grade classes were is the one on the right, the cafeteria was the almost square building just behind the main building, and the long wing on the left was finished just in time for the start of my third grade class (an era of horrors) – my fifth and sixth grades were in the main building. The only structures that didn’t exist 50 years ago are the large structure with the white roof towards the top of the picture, and the smaller structures alongside the track.
Our house was/is the structure across from the school, just to the left of the ‘Google’ word at the bottom.
