Neahkahnie Mountain US 101 (#1179)
US 101 crossing Neahkahnie Mountain, a particularly trecherous section with a very steep drop down to the Pacific. Per the following link, the rockwork, and much of the construction of the roadway, were done by workers of the Works Progress Administration of the New Deal. The roadway opened in 1940, the link includes a picture of driving over the roadway in 1943. The sign on the adjacent picture (#1177) describes how the road was cut out of the mountain, along with construction pictures.
