Pompeys Pillar National Monument MT Clark's slave (#0476)

Pompeys Pillar National Monument MT Clark's slave (#0476)
Something I'd never heard, that Clark of Lewis and Clark had a slave. Apparently York was largely treated similar to other crew by Clark (the placard is legible in larger versions) when on the expedition, even carrying a gun, which slaves could not legally do at that time.

The link provided by Clint (see comment below), particularly to the poem "God's House" provides a moving caricature of what the experience must have been like for York:

You've never mentioned an interest in poetry here, but I knew a Kentucky poet who wrote about York (though he stood me up once for a radio show I'd scheduled). It's powerful stuff ...

Thank you for this, the poetry, particularly the "God's House," really give a strong sense of what York must have experienced. I'm going to add that link to the description.
