Phoenix, Arizona state capitol (1987)

Arizona State Capitol -- not quite. The state capitol building, started in 1898 and expanded in 1918 and 1938, once housed all of the branches of government. It is now a museum, with the branches of government now in the adjacent buildings -- building which were sold to private investors. An historic building, overwhelmed by privately owned buildings housing the state government, seems befitting for a state known for its small government stance.
