Shasta Dam & headtower (1122)

Shasta Dam & headtower (1122)
Shasta Dam. Visible in the reservoir are the remnants of the head tower that was used in the construction of the dam. The headtower was partially dismantled at the completion of the dam.

I think the idea was that they'd cut the tower down enough it would never emerge above the surface. They didn't plan on the lake level getting quite so low!

I would have thought that since the lake does have pretty good variation in level, they would have cut it further back. Either they didn't expect as much variation as it has, or they weren't worried because its too close to the dam to be in navigable water.

On a family trip in 1991, we took the rental boat right up to the tower! No pix, alas. They've considerably increased the restricted zone around the dam since 9/11. We were puzzled by it at the time, but figured out what it was from the pix in the exhibit hall at the dam. (Yes, there was also a big drought then.)

Glad your boat didn't get sucked under...
