As a child I listened to radio broadcasts of shows "live from Radio City" -- broadcasts that suggested all of the potential and excitement of the big city.

The car with the hood raised had been part of the Dominican Day Parade that had passed through the area about 30 minutes earlier. I'd had no idea how large the Dominican community was in New York -- the parade was long and boisterous with multiple contingents of dancers.

Makes most sense if viewed as part of Coming Out/Northeast set

My first flirtation with New York City was a brief stop in about 1995 with the woman who would eventually be my first wife. She had an uncle who was a Franciscan friar staffing a homeless shelter up around 150th street, not too far from the George Washington Bridge. He took us around the neighborhood, which was predominantly Dominican. He got us free Dominican food from a storefront, and we talked a long time with the owners. It's a good memory.

My first time was coming in from JFK when I returned from being stationed in Germany, in November, 1969. I barely saw the city then, but it was the start of many decades of enjoying the excitement of being there.
