Portland Canal fjord 499a1

Portland Canal fjord 499a1
Stewart is at the end of a fjord called Portland Canal (wikipedia explains why the fjord is called a canal (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Canal)

From 1994 San Francisco - Arctic Ocean camping trip. Scan of an older picture. Best viewed as part of the NW Canada set.

The word "canal" is used far north of here for the Lynn Canal, a little inlet near Haines, Alaska. I never looked up why they called it a canal. It looks very similar to this. At first glance, I thought this photo was taken there.

The Hood Canal off the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Washington state, parallel to Puget Sound, is also a fjord. Apparently we can blame George Vancouver for that name, too. Btw, the Wikipedia article is wrong (perish the thought!) in saying that "channel" is the cognate; in fact, _both_ "channel" and "canal" come from the same root. The astronomer Schiaparelli called the features he thought he saw on Mars "canali," which in Italian can mean either "channel" or "canal"--when the term got translated as "canal," all sorts of implications ensued! But that's a whole 'nother discussion...

Imagine how much easier life would be if it weren't for an Italian astronomer dreaming of cannelloni while star-gazing!
