San Bernardino JC Pennys (1782a)

San Bernardino JC Pennys (1782a)
Like too many older downtowns in the U.S., downtown San Bernardino looks relatively decayed, containing many abandoned buildings. On the west side of downtown is an abandoned mall. Per Wikipedia, the mall was opened in 1972 as part of an urban renewal effort which didn't succeed, closing in the 90's. The outline of "JC Penney" can be seen on the building.

It fascinates me that I have seen the entire life cycle of the indoor mall, from birth to death. I can remember when these malls were the place to be. Now, almost every one of them I've known is abandoned.

Hadn't really thought of it in those terms, since there's still plenty open in California. Back in Jacksonville, some of them were just poorly thought out in the first place and died within 10 years or so of opening in the 60's.
