CEC 475S is a Duple Dominant bodied YMT new to Stainton’s Coaches of Kendal in May 1978 RET 150M is a Plaxton Panorama bodied YRT new to Riley of Rotherham (37) in May 1974 B104 XKX is a Plaxton Paramount bodied YNT new to Smith of Rickmansworth in January 1985

Friday 29 December 1989 – With Ely Cathedral as a backcloth, Grey’s of Ely ESU 389 seen parked at the former coach park on Barton Road.The car park in the background remains today but, for some strange reason, the coach parking area once used for visitors to the city has been redeveloped with houses. The Visit Ely website tells that coach parking is available at the Football Club on Downham Road around a mile away. The coach is a Duple Dominant bodied Bedford, a YMT which I believe had been new to Kenzie’s of Shepreth.

Friday 29 December 1989 – Grey’s of Ely B104 XKX, a Plaxton Paramount bodied Bedford YNT new to Smith of Rickmansworth in January 1985, parked at the yard at Ely.

Friday 29 December 1989 – Grey’s of Ely F569 JMY, a Talbot Express 14 seat mini-coach seen at the yard in Ely. Crystals of Dartford van conversion I think.

Saturday 2 October 1999 – Grey’s of Ely ESU 238, a Plaxton Premiere, seen heading eastbound on the A11 at Red Lodge.

Wednesday 30 December 1992 – A frosty morning in Ely around 0830 with three local vehicles that had been parked overnight. Storey’s Coaches of Littleport RNY 309Y, a Plaxton Paramount bodied Leyland Tiger new in March 1983 to Hill’s of Tredegar, is flanked by to Bedfords operated by Ely based Grey’s Coaches. Quite a number of vehicles in the Grey’s fleet carry dateless ‘ESU’ registrations. Furthest from the camera is Plaxton Supreme bodied ESU 369 and on the right is Duple Dominant bodied ESU 389.

Wednesday 8 September 2010 (approx 0905) – Grey's of Ely Limited Plaxton Verde ESU 307 parked near Newmarket railway station. (Possibly a Volvo B10B new to City of Oxford in April 1997 registered P634 FFC) The bus is used on a school contract in the Newmarket area (on a previous occasion it has been seen near Ousden and Dunstall Green). The former railway station buildings, now commercial business premises, form the backcloth. The present day station is a very basic modern day affair off camera to the left.

Wednesday 8 September 2010 (approx 0905) – Grey's of Ely Limited Plaxton Verde ESU 307 parked near Newmarket railway station. The bus is used on a school contract in the Newmarket area (on a previous occasion it has been seen near Ousden and Dunstall Green). (Possibly a Volvo B10B new to City of Oxford in April 1997 registered P634 FFC)

The bus is used on a school contract in the Newmarket area and since I took a photograph of it in September fleetnames have been added. Thursday 17 August 2000 (1125) – Grey’s of Ely ESU 320 on Elizabeth Way, Cambridge (approaching Newmarket Road roundabout seen from on board Stagecoach Cambus 576 (P576 EFL)). It is a Berkhof Radial bodied Dennis Javelin new in January 2000 registered ESU 320. Grey’s had a range of registrations in the ‘ESU’ series which were moved from coach to coach as fleet changes occurred. Later the company began to use a series of registrations featuring ‘ELY’ and this coach became G12 ELY.

Wednesday 5 September 2007 – Grey’s of Ely ESU 350, a UVG bodied Dennis Javelin that had been new to Ford’s of Althorne in March 2000 registered W386 WPX, seen near Newmarket railway station. The original brick built station buildings were sold as commercial properties and the trains stop further along the platform which just provides basic bus shelter type cover for waiting passengers.

Saturday 7 March 2015 (1219) - Grey's Coaches ESU 389 seen in its home city of Ely, Cambridgeshire. It is a Plaxton Cheetah bodied Mercedes-Benz. (G18 ELY stands behind)

Sunday 25 July 2021 (0940) – Greys of Ely G12 ELY, an Irizar i8 new in August 2016, seen at the Witchford premises preparing to leave for an assignment to London. The village of Witchford about three miles west of the cathedral city of Ely.

Sunday 25 July 2021 (0942) – Greys of Ely operates a very well presented coach fleet along with a range of older double deckers, the latter used on schools and works contracts. Seen at the company premises in Witchford: G17 ELY is a Van Hool TX27 Astromega which I believe was new to DJ Coaches, Gravesend in March 2014 registered YJ14 CDF. SN04 AEJ, a Transbus President bodied Trident that had been new to Lothian Buses (694) in March 2004. G14 ELY, an Irizar i6 new in June 2015.
