East Yorkshire Scarborough & District 436 (F436 GAT) in Scarborough – 10 August 1994 (235-1)
Wednesday 10 August 1994 – East Yorkshire Motor Services is the larger operator in Scarborough and runs its local services under the Scarborough and District name.
436 (F436 GAT), a Reeve Burgess bodied Mercedes-Benz 811D new in July 1989, was seen in Victoria Road, Scarborough and carries the ‘Scarborough Skipper’ branding.
This part of the town was close to where my Grandparents lived, Nelson Street being where the white gable end stands, and this was the route we walked when going to and from town and the seafront. That building was ‘Babyland’ selling cots, prams etc and the gable end had their name in very large lettering along with a hand with index finger pointing to the entrance. The lettering has gone but it appears the pointing finger has been retained/renewed in red. (Google’s Streetview image captured in 2018 still shows it).
I recall a number of other shops along here notably the chemists (in a property on the left) where we would take our films for processing.
Vine Street is on the right beyond the bus shelter where the services of the ‘combine’ operators once terminated at the garage owned by the West Yorkshire Road Car Company – before my time though.
What I do recall at the corner of Vine Street was a hairdressers shop (Corrison’s whose shop sign is just visible on the edge of the photo). In the rendering on the building front they had set a small collection of implements of their trade – a pair of scissors, a comb etc
