I travelled here specifically for the dark skies. Unfortunately the clouds conspired against me in this direction and were illuminated by the lights from a town many miles away. Nevertheless, I was fairly pleased with this.

A good attempt here Chris. I have a 'Clear night Filter' which filters out a lot of town light (warm lights) that may help in situations like this but it wont get rid of cloud :) Well done. Herb

Thanks Herb, useful info as I'm mostly shooting with that kind of light pollution.

Breathtaking. The stars reflected in the water are something special.

Many thanks Steve, I'm still learning and since joining Ipernity I've had some fantastic advice on night shots.

Clouds with standing the stars look rather good and a big jump forward. I think your biggest jump would be to go from F2.8 to F3.2-4 looking at the difference between middle of shot to corners. I am being a bit picky when I look at the stars, in general look very good. What Herb says about a "clear night filter" does work in general kills the light pollution colour from city lights. at the moment I would even swap a sky like this for our total cloud cover and rain spoken like a totally frustrated night shooter..

Dont give in keep trying and planning..

Many thanks for the advice and encouragement. It's much appreciated. It was really dark here and that light in the clouds I don't even recall seeing. I'm glad I got some stars though. As of Mid-August we have got our night back and I'll be able to venture out again to get some night photography practice in. I'll definitely be experimenting with the settings as you have suggested.
