Dundee from a distance

Dundee from a distance
I had visited this tree in the daytime. I knew that I had to come back and find it at night. It was an adventure to find it and then find my way back

Heidiho, Le rêveur de Léon Régel, Per, Nathalie and 24 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great shot only ever see Dundee by day. If you lifted ISO higher and shot much shorter you would have had perfect stars not trailed stars. This is my kind of shot I use D810.

Thanks Steve, I I still have to learn about night photography, but I'm keen to work on it. I need to figure out how to post the exif on here, but this shot was 2.5 seconds at ISO 6400, so it could be camera movement, I'm always getting it. I've been taking pictures for decades and still feel like a beginner! I treated myself to a second hand D850 a year or so back. I hardly use it, but am trying to motivate myself, hence joining up with Ipernity.

As long as the EXIF is attached to your file, it shows up here in the 'Actions' drop down on the right side actions bar. "Shooting information".

Thank you very much. I had walked quite a bit to get here and was lucky to get this shot before the cloud came over.

I never have a tripod, so seeing images like this is a delight (and good choice to come back at night for this, it is a great tree).

Thank you. It is a great tree and I plan to visit again sometime, I do like a lone tree.

I so often am amongst full stands of trees, that a lone tree certainly has an almost exotic appeal.

Thanks Raingirl, I agree on the appeal you've mentioned, I just can't explain it.

I was born in Dundee, but never lived there. Maybe Dundee at a distance is the best way to see it.

Thanks Amelia, Dundee has certainly changed from the 80s. It was the "big" city for me then, where my parents went monthly for the "big shop". I was at Camperdown park a few weeks ago. It was a fantastic place to visit.

Great capture here. ~ Steve has it right there there. If I am not sure of how the result might look, I always check out the taken photo straight after taking, on the camera LED screen at the highest magnification to see if there is movement in the stars. 2.5 secs would normally be OK as I take shots at up to 30secs with often less movement than this on my 11mm (16mm full frame equiv). The focal length of your lens makes a big difference but your 14mm should have been fine. If you get a lot of this, maybe as Steve says, upping the ISO just a little would make a difference too. Your tree and background city look pretty sharp and so I doubt real camera movement was to blame. A few more test shots at different settings might be in order the next time you are shooting stars.
Ps Steve was my Night shot mentor too so his advice is golden.

One of my shots here, but I don't count myself as being an expert and I very rarely see stars near my home town of Oldham: www.ipernity.com/doc/1081863/52219910/in/album/1059358

Many thanks Herb. Yes Steve has shared his knowledge with me and I'm very grateful for you to suggest the same things too. It has reawakened my interest in night photography as I was a bit stuck and was taking a break in using my camera for quite some time. Joining Ipernity has been a route back too, as if I take shots it's also good to have other people to look at them and provide feedback. I've started to take my camera with me again on my walks so I can get the juices flowing and learn new things.

That's the way to go Chris. The more you do, and in my opinion, share, the better you get and with that the more enjoyment too. A few people in Ipernity share your interest in 'real' landscapes but unfortunately we don't have a lot who do stars.
Here is one who has an interest in the night sky: www.ipernity.com/home/kohummel

Best bet is when you find a person with a shared interest on here, make them an acquaintance (Persons - Name/drop down box/ left click choice) and then you can keep an eye on their output with 'Contacts Tab/News of your contacts' this will show you the latest photos of all your contacts or friend. (Friends share more info!) . I have just made you an acquaintance so I can keep an eye on your latest pics and so yes -keep that camera with you and go that extra mile for something special.

Good luck and Best Wishes. Herb
