The soldier beetle (Cantharis fusca) is common in Europe. This pretty beetle, slightly larger than 1 cm with a soft body, is found mainly on forest edges and in meadows, where it lives on aphids and small insects, but also on plant shoots. Close relatives of this common soft-bodied beetle, e.g. the Spanish fly (Lytta vesicatoria), contain such a strong poison that in ancient Greece death sentences were carried out with it.
