... died on the inner-German border until 9.11.1989, the year the Berlin Wall fell. The official figures: 139 at the Berlin Wall, 327 at the German-German border; however the number of unreported cases is probably higher. A terribly large number. A memorial by the artist Herbert Fell from Niederlauer/Berlin commemorates these dead. The memorial is also intended to commemorate all those who were cowardly liquidated during the National Socialist dictatorship under the phrase "shot while fleeing". There are no figures for this - there were certainly tens of thousands. The memorial is located in the Skulpurenpark at the former border crossing Eußenhausen-Mellrichstadt.
