Johannes & Gautier making the new Death Pit
We have a triple compost bay, a mulch pile a worm farm and our chickens for getting rid of garden waste. But some things are just too disgusting to put in any of those: chicken head, chicken intestines, feathers, chickens that have died of unknown causes. We have been using a dedicated compost bin for this purpose, but Coco has been getting under the edges, and anyway, we have no real way to empty it. So we now have a new Death Pit - a deep hole with a barrel inserted (ends cut off) to keep it from collapsing in on itself. It is located between three fruit trees, so it will nourish the soil as it rots down. The lid fits on top with a big bit of bluestone to weight it down and there are bluestones around the lid to keep burrowing animals out. The best part was hearing our HelpXers Gautier and Johannes say "Death Pit" in French ("le puits de la mort") and Danish ("dødshul")!
