Wichtig ist nicht, ob ein Zug zu spät kommt, sondern ob die Fahrgäste ihre Anschlüsse schaffen. Hartmut Mehdorn (*1942), deutscher Industriemanager und Maschinenbauingenieur

Hat er damit so unbedingt recht? Was würde er Herr Mehdorn wohl sagen, wenn man ihm mitteilt: "Tut uns leid, aber ihr Anschluß ist bereits vor 10 Minuten abgefahren, weil Ihr Zug zu spät gekommen ist! - Aber ... ähm, das ist ja nicht wichtig ...!"

A very nice picture, and very interesting discussion!!
I am sure Erhard will know the German answer, but the English way is that the signalman has standing orders saying how long he can hold a train to wait for a late running connection.
Those orders will have been written for him knowing the rest of the timetable, such as next possible train, etc etc..
