San Martino: Castagne e..
MAY BE BETTER ENLARGED
1! / November: The day of San Martino: here in northeastern Italy the tradition of the mantle was celebrated, according to which Martino di Tours, in seeing a half-naked beggar suffering the cold, gave him half his coat; shortly after meeting another beggar, he gave him the other half: and the sky is clear, giving the sun and a milder temperature. The name 'Summer of San Martino is shared by other Iberian and Francophone cultures; 'Indian summer' for English speakers.
However: of all this tradition remains the fact that during this period the barrels open for the first taste of new wine, which is usually accompanied by chestnuts, however now very expensive :-)

Beatrice Degan(MARS) club has replied to Roger (Grisly) clubVery nice picture, and story!
Many years ago I visited a little village in France, named after St Martin. They too have the same legend of the coat and the beggar..
Best Wishes, and a Good Weekend
Peter
Actually I found out that it is not a legend so typically Italian , at least in the Northern Italy, but shared by other Iberian and Francophone cultures: I think it comes from ancient 'pagan' celebrations for the grape harvest, then, obviously, absorbed into 'christian' traditions like so many others , I mean. Nonetheless ... a nice tradition.....as long as it lasts -)
Thank you very much or your so kind remarks and appreciation.
Best wishes and have a lovely Sunday
Bea
Grazie!!!
Un saluto speciale da Bea
I can't see wine on your composition but I believe you: new and light wines must be in harmony with the new chestnuts, and on this tasty and so beautifully traditional composition, it would undoubtedly have brought an additional autumnal touch.
Such images, specific to a time of year when tasting the last fruits near the comforting fireplace, remain anchored in our imagination and affect us each time as much. Thank you for that, dear friend!
My epistolary regards,
Eric
PS: oh sorry, I just found the "missing" wine on your previous composition!
Beatrice Degan(MARS) club has replied to Eric Desjours clubBut we know ... typical of religions make the archaic peasant traditions their own so as to include them in hagiographies of saints.
But also this recurrence like many others are destined to end in oblivion: what remains, at least for now and only among those who have enjoyed this specific one, as children , is just the opportunity to meet up with friends and enjoy good food ( not just chestnuts), pleasant conversation in a warm smilingly atmosphere! Happy to have been able to evoke for you certain magical moments of childhood.
Merci beaucoup& beaucoup!!
Un saluto rispettosamente affettuoso,
Bea
Thank you very very much Diane !!**
