Monument aux Girondins/ fountain and column
The monument aux Girondins commemorates the Gironde deputies who were victims of terror during the French Revolution, consists of a large column and is flanked by two basins with spectacular statues, an important monument to the reign of terror.
It is a 19th century monument dating from 1894 to 1902. During the Second World War, the groups of figures cast out of metal at the foot of the column to be melted down were dismantled. After the end of the German occupation, the figures reappeared and have been part of the monument again since 1983. Since 8 July 2004, the Girondist Monument has been under a preservation order.
