The Unisphere at the New York World's Fair of 1964-1965

Great shot, Alan. This is the last of the big "world's fairs" I can remember in the U.S. and was certainly touted as a window to the future. Interestingly, this fair was not sanctioned by the Bureau International des Exhibitions, the official body in charge of designating International fairs and exhibitions, of which there are three types according to Wikipedia: universal, specialized and horticultural. The Wiki article says that the '64 NY fair was not sanctioned because the organizers refused to abide by the six-month limit on operating time insisted on by the bureau. Most of the international fairs, now called "expos," in the last fifty years have been specialized. The last one in the U.S. was the 1984 "World of Rivers– Fresh Water as a source of life" expo, held in New Orleans. One article I found stated that such fairs are almost always money-losing enterprises. The last "universal" world expo was held last year in Astana, Kazakhstan. I'm pretty sure you can buy official souvenirs quite cheaply on e-bay. You may even be able to snag a copy of the theme song,"Nothin' Could Be Granda Than the World's Fair in Astana, In the Morrrrning", sung by Al Jolson impersonator, Borat Sagdiyev.
