Began in the chorus of the Marinsky and became a pupil at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire (1895-1899) under Gabel and Samus.Debut in 1899 at the Mariinsky Theatre as Berendey in ''The Snow Maiden'' by. Rimsky-Korsakov.He remained at the Marinsky until 1911 and moved to the Bolshoi where he remained the rest of his career .He was appointed Professor of Singing in 1920 at the Moscow Conservatory .Roles included Sobinin in “A Life of the Tsar” by Glinka , Lensky in “Eugene Onegin” Tchaikovsky , Sinodal “Demon” by Rubenstein , Dante in “Franceso de Rimini” by Nepravnik , Berendey in ''The Snow Maiden'' by. Rimsky-Korsakov..Romeo in “Romeo & Juliette” by Gounod , Lohengrin “Lohengrin” Ny Wagner, Don Jose in “Carmen” by Bizet , Rhadames in “Aida” by Verdi ,Faust in “Faust” by Gounod and Prince in “Russalka” by Dvorak.
