het feest van allerheiligen de kerken stroomden vol met mensen(alsof God dat zelf zo gewild heeft)--lissabon toen 275.000 inwoners de stad stond bekend om haar vroomheid en vooruitstrevende denkwijze -op die zonnige ochtend beierden in heel de stad de kerklokken om de gelovigen de H.Mis te laten bijwonen -om 10 over half 10 klonk een vreemd en onbekend geraas als het holle rommelen van de donder ergens in de verte--van de naar schatting 20.000 huizen werden er 17.000 een grote puinhoop--de kracht van de beving was naar schatting 8,9 op de richter schaal- heel zuidwest portugal liep zware schade op-de beving was te voelen in heel frankrijk en spanje--zelfs in nederland en duitsland zwaaiden de kroonluchters in de kerken --Overal in europa vertoonde het water in de meren een ongewone beroering --het dodental van de beving wordt geschat op 30.000 tot 75.000,,,,,schade van betekenis kwam uit spanje en zelfs marokko.
