Within the palace of the Mughal emperor Akhbar, it is located at Fatehpur Sikri, western Uttar Pradesh, a city founded in 1571 by the emperor. In 1584 the city was abandoned, for lack of water for the population's consumption. The imperial complex was classified UNESCO heritage in 1986.
