WP1885 WPG - SOUTH MAIN ST. (WEST SIDE - S. OF PORTAGE)

WP1885 WPG - SOUTH MAIN ST. (WEST SIDE - S. OF PORTAGE)
Postal strike is a bit unclear, but the year of mailing appears to be 1908.

The view is of the west side of Main Street, looking north towards the intersection of Portage Avenue. The McIntyre Building can be see at the top right. (For some reason, this section of Main Street did not get the attention of many photographers.)

Several business signs are legible including:
- Bryant's Studio (Photographs), bottom left.
- The Lewis Furniture Company
- J. S. Stephenson Merchant Tailor
- Chevrier & Co. Artisan Boot & Shoe Store
- Douglas Shoes
- Leslie's Furniture (John Leslie)

The Streetcar is labelled "Broadway" and is #256.

Publisher is unidentified but Title line and numbering is similar to Winnipeg Photo?

I'd have to think it's WPC although the lettering is not the characteristic lettering. Two of my three WPCs that show Winnipeg scenes are nos. 896 and 901. I don't have anything else in the 800 range. That we now have a number 862 in Winnipeg suggests that there are a lot of undiscovered Winnipeg WPCs. Even better - this is the first that I've seen that is actually a standard downtown postcard scene, although as you rightly point out, it is of a block that was seldom photographed (perhaps because it was already looking a little antiquated).

It looks like about a 1907 photo, plus or minus 1. The McIntyre Block is at its expanded size but there are no autos.
