Das ehemelige Monte Palace Hotel oben im Bild.
Das Gelände wurde im 18. Jahrhundert von dem englischen Konsul Charles Murray gekauft und gelangte 1897 in Besitz von Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues, der dort ein luxuriöses Wohnhaus errichtete, das später in ein Hotel umgewandelt wurde, das Monte Palace Hotel. Nach dem Tode Rodrigues' gelangte das Hotel in Besitz eines Kreditinstituts, welches es 1987 an den Unternehmer José Berardo weiterverkaufte. Dieser reichte den Garten an eine Stiftung weiter, die ihn heute betreibt.
Im Teich gibt es zahlreiche Koi.
Der Nishikigoi (japanisch 錦鯉, wörtlich „Brokatkarpfen“), kurz auch Koi genannt, ist eine Zuchtform des Karpfens (Cyprinus carpio). Koi oder in Zusammensetzungen auch -goi ist das japanische Wort für Karpfen allgemein.
Es gibt Zuchtformen des Koi, die dem in Europa gezüchteten Spiegelkarpfen oder Zeilkarpfen in der Beschuppung gleichen. Diese werden Doitsu (japanisch doitsu „Deutschland, deutsch“) oder genauer Doitsugoi („deutscher Karpfen“) genannt.
