Laguna Verde - view full size!

Laguna Verde is situated at 4300m in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, SW Bolivia, just north of the border with Chile. Its green colour comes from mineral suspensions, among them arsenic. Flamingoes are never seen there, only in neighbouring Laguna Blanca. Because of its high mineral content Laguna Verde never freezes over, even in temperatures as low as -56°C.

Laguna Colorada (view on black!)
Laguna Colorada lies at 4278m in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve in the south western corner of Bolivia. Its red colour stems from halobacteria and algae (dunaliella salina) and a very high copper content.
Laguna Colorada is the breeding ground of several flamingo species, mainly the threatened James's flamingo. In 1990 it was designated a RAMSAR site.

Laguna Capina is situated at appr. 4.440m, some 30 km north of Laguna Colorada. It is mined for Borax by manual labour using pick and shovel and a simple workshop and workers' lodgings are on the shore (see inset). The "road" on the left is used by lorries.

View from the top of Isla Incahuasi over Salar de Uyuni. The distant mountain is Volcán Tunupa.
Salar de Uyuni lies at 3660m and is the world's largest salt flat at 10.582 km². 30.000-42.000 years ago Salar de Uyuni was part of prehistoric Lake Minchin which slowly evaporated and left the Salar along with Lake Titicaca, Lago Poopó and Salar de Coipasa. Salar de Uyuni is covered with a salt crust of up to 30m thickness, underneath is a brine saturated with sodium chloride, lithium chloride, and magnesium chloride. Salar de Uyuni holds 43% of the world's lithium reserves.
Isla Incahuasi and the other "islands" are the tops of ancient volcanoes submerged during the era of Lake Minchin. They are covered by fossilized coral and stromatolites, giant cacti (trichocereus pasacana) grow on the islands.

Tupiza-San Vicente Road (PiP)

The unsurfaced toll road connecting Tupiza (2965m) and the mining town of San Vicente (4498m) is used by lorries - compared to other roads in the area it is in very good condition! The first inset shows the continuation of the road up to ca. 4000m at Cerro Huaynacancha, the photos were taken at appr. 3700m.

Espinazo del Diablo (the devil's backbone) rises to above 4000m near Tres Cruces, Jujuy, in the far north of Argentina. It is a colourful formation of sedimentary folds, formed in the Tertiary period above older rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic origin. This outcrop, known as Santa Barbara subgroup is made up of sedimentary rocks of continental origin, loam, sandy loam and calcareous claystones with frequent fossil remains of algae.

Rio Ibáñez (PiP)
88 km long Río Ibáñez originates near Cerro Hudson and drains into Lago General Carrera. In the 1991 Hudson eruption lahars ran down the valley, clogged it up and changed the course of the river. Because of Pinatubo earlier in 1991 the not much smaller Hudson eruption received hardly any international news coverage at the time.
Panorama stitched from 2 photos.
The inset shows the drowned trees of Bosque Muerto a bit further upstream.
