I used a Nikkor 70-300mm f4-4.5 G lens to take this photograph. It lacks ED glass; it is soft beyond 200mm at wider apertures; and it is flimsy with a plastic mount. Up to 200mm and at small apertures it can be stellar. Usefully, it is light in weight, and cheap on the used market - mine is mint and cost £50. The Nikkor 55-200mm DX VR is probably a better bet - it too is cheap on the secondhand market - but I still like the extra 100mm of the 70-300 and its ability to be used on full frame. This photograph was stretching its limits at 270mm wide open but the background is nicely blurred.
