Exhausted tourists taking a rest on a wall of St. Mark's Basilica.
The carvings displayed here may well be trophy pieces brought to Venice from elsewhere during the many wars the Venetians fought over centuries.
There are two "Birds drinking from a chalice" - icons and on the frieze below a hunting scene with a nice hare.

The Four Tetrachs
The Tetrarchs stand on the south-west corner of St. Mark's Basilica - since 1204. The carvings was taken from Constantinople, during the Fourth Crusade. The statues were carved around 300, depicting Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius and Constantinus I. They are the four Tetrachs. One of the Roman Emperors lost a part of the foot, when the carving was stolen in Constantinople. During an excavation in Istanbul in the 1960s a part of this foot was found.

The interior of St. Mark's Basilica´s is absolutely overwhelming. People taking photos are frowned about by the otherwise friendly guardians. As I could not find a pov in the nave, I climbed up to the gallery. So here are the domes...

The Horses of Saint Mark
Two of the four "Horses of Saint Mark" (aka "Quadriga"). They are placed on the facade above the porch of the basilica. The four horses came (just like the "Tetrarchs") as trophies to Venice in 1204 after the Fourth Crusade (aka "Sack of Constantinople"). They were looted again in 1797 by Napoleon´s troops, stayed some years in Paris and were returned to Venice in 1815. Actually seen here are replicas.
