Where the ruins of the castle now stand, overlooking the Kyle of Tongue, was the site of an 11th century Viking fortification. The castle was the ancient seat of the chief of the Clan Mackay, who may have built it in the 14th century, after the clan was expelled from its ancestral province of Moray to the county of Sutherland.
