Moura - São João Batista

Moura - São João Batista
The Romans called the town Moura Aruci Novum . Due to Muslim invasions, the name was changed to Al-Manijah. The current name Moura seems to be linked to the sad legend of Moura Salúquia.

Christian rule came into force in 1232, when the Mouraria quarter was established outside the walls. Its geostrategic importance at the time of the Christian reconquest and later is undisputed, as the first monastery of the Carmelite Order in Portugal was built here.

The Church of St. John the Baptist was built around the 16th century by King Manuel I. This church was built because the church in the castle of Moura did not have enough space for the number of worshippers.
