Cologne - Trimbornstrasse
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
Köln-Kalk is an old working class quarter, located on the right side of the Rhine river, where many industries settled in the second half of the 19th century. This side of the Rhine is often called "Schäl Sick" ("wrong side") by the locals. When the Romans had founded Cologne the Rhine was exactly the border between the Romans Empire - and the deep, dark, barbarian woods. The Romans lived on the right - and the rude heathens on the wrong side.
Trimbornstrasse in Kalk is not a melting pot, but a meeting place of different cultures, with many shops offering goods from Africa, Arabia and other areas. Some of the houses are well restored. Here is a detail.
