Salles-lès-Aulnay was a little hamlet less than 2 kms west of Aulnay, but meanwhile is part of the larger town. The distance to famous Romanesque masterpiece Saint-Pierre is only about 30 minutes - walking.

So, when within the 12th century the master-workshops created Saint-Pierre in Aulnay, the masters (or their apprentices) probably worked here as well. Many parallels can be found here, though the icons may not have the perfection found in Aulnay. Maybe some icons were tried here, before thay were carved for Saint-Pierre. So the churches in Salles-lès-Aulnay may have served as a "sample book".
