Thaon - Saint-Pierre
Saint-Pierre is a Romanesque church in the middle of the countryside.
The tower was erected late 11th century. The church was once built in the basilica style, but the side aisles were destroyed in the early 18th century. The church was locked, but I could peep in, as there was a hole in the door.
For some years after the French Revolution the building was used as a "atelier de salpêtrerie", what means explosives were produced and stored here. Later it was used by the parish again for some decades, but since the 1840 the church is - empty. Meanwhile the "Association des Amis de la Vieille Église de Thaon" takes care for it.
