svr[22] - Cliff Railway {1 of 4}
Bridgnorth Castle Hill Railway aka Bridgnorth Cliff Railway is a funicular between the High and Low Town "halves" of Bridgnorth, Shropshire. It dates from 1891 and is operated by the original company. Originally, operated as a "water balance" system but was converted to electrical operation in 1943/44 using a three [wire] rope system similar to colliery winding gear. The heavy wooden cars were replaced in 1955 by the aluminium monocoque "minibus" style bodies still in use today. The 3ft6" track was re-laid with "bullhead" around 1972. It remains one of the steepest funiculars and runs daily. [Sept / Oct 2022 was closed for painting, maintenance & electrical checks]
