gbw - Grindon Lough and the Stanegate
Grindon Lough - this lake varies in size depending on how much rain has fallen in the past few weeks. This is probably near to the maximum extent, in February 2020. It has no surface outlet, but probably drains out through the ridge of hills to the south [on the right, as this image was taken facing east] The modern road follows the line of the Roman road known as the "Stanegate" along the line, more or less parallel to the top of the same ridge.

Marco F. Delminho, Gillian Everett, Petar Bojić, Berny have particularly liked this photo

There may have been more water visible after the deluge on 3rd October 2020 - which was 24hours of a record-breaking day of almost continuous rain in many places in the UK - I didn't go to look.
