Xuanzang was awed by massive futures carved into the face of the mountain at Bamian in northern Afghanistan. “Northeast of the capital, on the declivity of a hill, there is standing stone figure about 150 feet high. To the east of the figure of standing Sakya [Buddha] . . . .in height one hundred feet” these figures were, alas, destroyed in 2001 CE by the Taliban. ~ Page 14
