On September 30, 1827 Hastings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Abney_Hastings sailed the ‘Karteria’ into the Bay of Irea in the Gulf of Corinth, where ten Turkish ships lay at anchor. Switching to steam, he turned the ship in rapid circles while its giant cannon roared in all directions. Within an hour four enemy ships had been burned and two captured. It was the first time that steamship had fought in battle, and Hastings had emphatically proved its worth.

A year later he died from his woulds while trying to retake Missolonghi. The Greeks gave him a state funeral, and his heart was removed, to be preserved in the Anglican church in Athens. There are many streets that carry his name in Greece – the Anglo-Saxon surname is usually rendered at ‘Astiggos’ – ye he is virtually unknown in Britain. ~ Page 136
