In the centre the newly born goddess Venus stands nude in a giant scallop shell. The size of the shell is purely imaginary, and is also found in classical depictions of the subject.[3] At the left the wind god Zephyrus blows at her, with the wind shown by lines radiating from his mouth. He is in the air, and carries a young female, who is also blowing, but less forcefully. Both have wings. Vasari was probably correct in identifying her as "Aura", personification of a lighter breeze.[4] Their joint efforts are blowing Venus towards the shore, and blowing the hair and clothes of the other figures to the right.[5] {From Wikipedia}

There are, of course, ways of interpreting Botticelli’s ‘Venus’ as a Christian allegory. A Grace stands near her, ready to wrap her up in pink robe, and the composition resembles the scene of a baptism . . . . Other details also invite viewers to look at the scene with Christian eyes. Venus’s pink robe, for instance, is studded with cornflowers, symbols of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven. The painting can thus be seen as an image of celestial love, an important Christian Platonic notion – but it does not have to be viewed that way. Pictures do not dictate their interpretation in the same way as texts; allegorical narratives can accompany them, but these can just be easily be dismissed. There is always the option, for views, to enjoy the obvious –that Simonetta is beautiful and naked. ` Page 208
