In his two broadsheets from 1530 and 1532 respectively, Durer’s pupil Erhard Schoen illustrated the apocalyptic horrors commonly associated with the recent Ottoman siege of Vienna. In the first (plate 3.23) entitled: A lament to God about the many and horrible frenzied deeds committed by the bloodthirsty Turks and request for merciful hel,’ a victorious Turkish army is shown ravaging the surrounding Viennese countryside killing innocent children while draging their prisoners in neckirons behind their horses. ~ Page 142
