GUM SAAN

GUM SAAN
Gold Mountain (Chinese: 金山; pinyin: Jīnshān; Cantonese Yale: Gāmsāan, "Gam Saan" in Cantonese, often rendered in English as Gum Shan or Gumshan) is a commonly used nickname for San Francisco, California, and historically used broadly by Chinese to refer to western regions of North America, including British Columbia,

The largest wave if Chinese emigration in history was ready to begin. The new emigrants from their Gaungdong Province homes would respond to the call from the Six Companies and Central Rail Road advertisements to gather near the coast, to travel to Hong Kong where they would climb on board the great sidewheel steamships to find their steerage berths. During the long passage, they would have plenty of time to eat, sleep, play games, tell stories, and dream of success to be found in a land they optimistically called ‘Gum Shan,’ or New Gold Mountain. ~ Page 13
