Thus the Horseman on the Pale Horse en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse signified Death. The diseases and disasters of this Apocalyptic Age, in all their profusion and unpredictability, meant that death was an ever-present feature of daily life. The sight of other people dying was familiar to everyone, and celebrated or making of their death was customary. For a Christian, his or her death, and what comes after it, is both the end of life, and thus to be feared, but also the beginning of the high-point of the journey of life, and thus to be anticipated with joy, for it means the end of the exile of the soul in this world. I will be no surprise to learn that images of death were everywhere in this period, of the need to prepare for the afterlife. Printing helped spread these visual and verbal messages to the semi-literate and completely illiterate. In the words of the great French historian of art, Emile Male, ‘the image of death was everywhere’ in the fifteenth century, while ‘no century was more familiar with death than the sixteenth. . . . .
