When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

By the time a strong ozone layer exited as well, screening out lethal short-wave radiation. The intertidal reaches and dry land were safe for life. L by the late Ordovician period, 450 million years ago, the first plants, probably derived from multicellular algae, invaded the land. The terrain was generally flat, lacking mountains, and mile in climate. Animals soon followed: invertebrates of still u unknown nature burrowed and and tunneled through the primitive soil. Paleontologists have found their trails but still no bodies. Within 50 or 60 million years, early into the Devonian period, the pioneer plants had formed thick mats and low shrubbery widely distributed over the continents. The first spiders, mites, centipedes, and insects swarmed there, small animals truly engineered for life on the land. They were followed by the amphibians, evolved from lobe-finned fishes, and burst of land vertebrates, relative giants among land animals, to inaugurate the Age of Reptiles. Next came the Age of Mammals and finally the Age of Man, amid continuing tumultuous change at the level of class and order.~ Page 326
